after going everywhere in the city on the first day, we took a day-tour on the second day to s??zh??u and zh??uzhu??ng and saw beautiful world heritage gardens and serene canals of the ancient water city. the maglev train ride from/to the airport was also exciting. the trip was just a few days but we got to see good contrast between the super modern and traditional sides of china.

from shanghai, we went back to tokyo and spent time with our parents.
this time we had a chance to get together at a new japanese restaurant and enjoy delicious steak.

the rest of 2014 was relatively uneventful. komei is still working on the real-time networking component that powers facetime. risa is continuing her interpreting job. this year was especially challenging because her weekend teaching at monterey instritute (miis) in the fall coincided with her busiest season.

komei took the bmw ultimate driving experience course this year.
he was always interested in the course at bmw greenville, sc, but it would be too far and costly.
so, when he learned they were
coming to alameda, ca
this summer, he took the opportunity.
the full-day course included collision avoidance, skid control and autocross,
and was full of excitement (photos).

in august, a freind invited us to a
charity event
in menlo park.
we had no idea there was such a huge and gorgeous horse club right behind the downtown.

komei also attends virtual reality (vr) meetups for his personal interests.
vr is getting more real and more intuitive every time a new device or new software comes along every few months.
since it is something you have to try for yourself, it's great that many of these vr meetups feature a lot of hands-on demos.
